Within each of us, right now, is everything we need to thrive in the face of complexity and change. We just have to decide whether or not we are willing to do the work, whether or not we are willing to lead a more daring life.
In this collection, David Berry invites us to use his own emerging leadership story to imagine and inspire the evolution of our own. From getting lost in the woods, to gliding above the Pacific Ocean; from stumbling into Henry Kissinger to “interviewing” Bill Walton; from the tentative first steps of a new business to the fight to claim his own creative voice, David uses his own steps and mis-steps, and his evolving perspective along the way, to paint a compelling picture of the leadership we need now.
“A More Daring Life” is a call to deepen understanding, strengthen connection and commit to the exploration necessary to shake off the seduction of the status quo. It is a personal account of the bumpy ride that awaits all who choose to lead at the crossroads of change.

A More Daring Life Finding Voice at the Crossroads of Change eBook David Berry Reviews
Part motivation, part inspiration, part education this book provides a thoughtful reflection on leadership, life and personal growth. With his own experience as backdrop, David challenges us to be more curious about life and more vulnerable with others. Drawing on years of corporate experience and using concrete examples from daily life David puts his practice into theory for all of us to learn and grow together. He invites us to face our demons in the hope that our best self might emerge into A More Daring Life. David reminds us that both life and leadership require patience and diligence, creativity and discipline, a sense of humor and a sense of humility. Reading this is like taking a deep breath – energizing and satisfying.
Dear Reader, you are about to experience something rare and distinct in the world of words, especially words about leadership. You are going to hear a voice, a presence that has a rare depth of observation mixed with a deep empathy of how challenging it is to be human in our age, in our time. David’s words move us toward, not away from the complexity that is 21st century life thus far. I have long thought the universe/life/God “if” it has a design for us right now, surely it must be to teach us the limits of our 20th century over fascination with control and predictability. The 21st century is if nothing else, random and uncontrollable. How does one live, or lead?
Enter a poet and man of heart and vision, David Berry and his book, A More Daring Life Finding Voice at the Crossroads of Change. What? He encourages us to “risk more?” To “dare” to bring ourselves more fully into our lives, one conversation at time. Yes, he surely does. This man’s deep humility and positive regard for the human condition is writ large in the passages of this book. His expansive understanding of what is necessary for true leadership is nuanced and wide-ranging, And responsive to our time in history. It is leadership from the inside out. You will grow as you read Berry’s missives. Grow in deep connection and respect of yourself and others. Grow in self-compassion as well as self-awareness. Something deep within me slows and steadies as I read David. And I faintly hear a refrain from deep within my own being, “you are enough for your life, just go out and live it.” Thanks, Mr. Berry, I believe I will do just that with your book tucked in my knapsack like a road map.
A More Daring Life is an eclectic set of stories and ideas for business leaders of all walks. In his book, David Berry courageously shares his experiences, perspectives and learnings from many angles of his personal and professional life. The book leans into the brilliance of leaders like Joe Torre, David Whyte, Dick Enberg and Hall of Fame basketball player Bill Walton, as well as his many observations from years of living, consulting and coaching.
The book is a collection of David’s blog writings over many years and organized into three sections or “Voices” The Voice of Understanding, The Voice of Connecting, and Voice of Exploration. These “voices” give perspective to the journeys leaders embark upon, confront and experience regularly.
A More Daring Life can be read in a typical liner fashion or can be a guide to turn to for inspiration or insight whenever or wherever you may be looking for it. It’s easy to digest and approachable in its language. David Berry’s book is especially applicable for those looking to more closely weave their personal journey with the demands of leadership. A More Daring Life challenges us to rethink what it means to play safe in life and in our vocational journey.
I first met David when he gave a talk at a chapter meeting of a State association. He was brought in by one of the member agencies who engaged him to help with their leadership development program. He held the room at rapt attention as he told personal stories of discovery and learning, laced with moments of humility and self-reflection. Humorous and self-effacing yet encouraging and hopeful, I knew this was someone with whom I wanted to stay connected and get to know better. Someone from whom I could learn much. I ended up suggesting to our own leadership team that he be brought in to lead our annual retreat. We all experienced what I did that first night, with person after person telling me that it was one of the best, if not THE best, retreats they had attended.
After that, I connected with David on a well-known social media site for professionals, and have thoroughly enjoyed his posts - from short, pithy poster-like sayings to lengthier stories and lessons. I look forward to his posts each day and they never disappoint. Just like his wonderful book. I'm amazed that he can pen posts that consistently offer nugget after nugget of excellent suggestions on leadership, as well as pearl after pearl of wisdom. His overall organization of finding one's voices of understanding, connection and exploration makes sense. The book has inspired me to go after and claim these voices, to become authentically me, as I see now that life happens most richly at the edges of possibility and self-discovery.
There is so much good stuff in this book, and I recommend reading one chapter and then taking some time to really absorb it and find ways to integrate the ideas into your own life. If you try to read it like a novel you'll just be overwhelmed (at least I was) - I kept telling myself "That tidbit is fabulous!" only to forget it a couple of chapters hence. Keep this book close at hand and explore what it means to become fully yourself. You won't be disappointed - I think you'll be excited and energized.
This is a series of blog posts that have been organized into an overall theme on leadership. It isn't difficult to read and can give some beneficial information on becoming a better leader.
Great book!
